Students Compete in Science Olympiads

JUNIOR HIGH

The Junior High Science Olympiad was held Saturday, February 4 at Maryville.  Science Olympiad is a competition which includes students from 1A-6A schools  who compete on a regional level in their understanding of advanced scientific concepts in areas of interest. Some competitions contain material similar to what you find in a college classroom rather than a typical middle school classroom and are quite challenging.  Pattonsburg is one of the smallest school in the Northwest  region who competed.   Three  teams placed first and will  advance to  state competition  April 8, 2017 at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.

For the first time, Pattonsburg as a team placed high enough to qualify as the regional alternate, missing state by two points. Many of the teams in the competition sent full teams of 15 and entered and placed in  more events and were able to accumulate a higher point total. Pattonsburg competed with 11 students, and of the 11 students, all placed in at least one category!   Students worked hard, many logging more than 40 hours of practice between home and school, in the last few months. Congratulations!

Mrs. Hulet would like to thank the following people for assisting in Science Olympiad: the PHS Booster Club for donating $150 towards a bottle rocket launcher to be used in both this and the classroom (unfortunately that event was called due to wind), Mr. Dan Dreesen for helping with Roads Scholar, Mrs. Sherry Siever for covering a practice when I needed to be in two places at once, Sandy Booth for her work with the Food Science team, and all the parents who helped and encouraged their children along the way. Thank you all!

HIGH SCHOOL

Congratulations to the HS Sceince Olympiad team. They traveled to NCMC in Trenton, Missouri on Saturday, February 11, to compete against several school from our region.  While they were both a very small and primarily young team (many schools play primarily juniors and seniors and have teams of up to fifteen with multiple alternates) they still had a nice turn-out and deserve a nice pat the back for that! Team members were senior, Caleb Teel; sophomore, Makelle Hobson; and freshmen, Clark Adler, Angelina Anderson, and Shelby Snider. The teams competed in a handful of events and placed in three.

Individual honors go to:

2nd Rocks and Minerals: Angelina Anderson & Caleb Teel
4th Invasive Species: Clark Adler & Makelle Hobson

5th Ecology: Clark Adler & Makelle Hobson
